Page to download lmsGrowth and HK1996.xls

In collaboration with Department of Pediatrics (CUHK), the Centre constructed the set of growth charts for children aged 0 -18 years in Hong Kong in 1993. The 1993 Hong Kong Growth Standards were established.

In November 2006, an Excel file HK1996.xls containing 1993 Hong Kong Growth Standards data is built up in collaboration with Department of Pediatrics (CUHK), UCL Institute of Child Health (UK) and Medical Research Council (UK). HK1996.xls is a file in supplement with an Excel Add-in lmsGrowth which converts measurements to/from UK reference z-scores by fitting data using LMS method. Both lmsGrowth and HK1996.xls are openly accessed and can be downloaded. Users are welcome to download lmsGrowth and HK1996.xls for their own use. For future submitting paper and publication, authors are required to acknowledge Dr. Pun, Dr. Tim Cole in incorporating the HK 1993 Growth reference to their lmsGrowth program and Centre for Epidemiology and Biostatistics, School of Public Health, Faculty of Medicine, CUHK.

By running lmsGrowth and selecting HK1996.xls (1993 Hong Kong Growth Standards data) as a reference, you can choose :

"Calculator" to calculate z-score and percentile for weight for age, height for age and BMI for age for individual measurement with aged 0 to 18 year

"Measurements to/from SDS" to calculate z-score and percentile for weight for age, height for age and BMI for age for a group of subjects' measurements with aged 0 to 18 years

"Centilies" to report z-score and percentile for weight for age, height for age and BMI for age from aged 0 - 18 years

"Weight Gain to SDS" to convert weight gain during infancy with aged 0 - 2 years for either a child or a group of children into z-score(s)

"BMI to IOTF Grades" to convert BMI to International Obesity Task Force grade for either a child or a group of children with aged 2 to 18 years.


Firstly, click here to link to the page to download lmsGrowth, a Microsoft Excel add-in to convert measurements to/from UK/HK reference z-scores.

Instructions on Installation of Excel Add-in lmsGrowth

(1) copy British1990.xls to the Excel startup folder, e.g. c:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\XLSTART for Windows XP running Microsoft Office 2003, or c:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office 10\XLStart for earlier version of Microsoft office.

(2) copy growth.xla, growth.hlp and growth.cnt to another directory, e.g. c:\growth in Windows.

(3) start Excel, click File|New, then click Tools|Add-ins|Browse to locate growth.xla and click OK to confirm.


Secondly, click here to download HK1996.xls, a Microsoft Excel file containing 1993 Hong Kong growth standards data which will be called by lmsGrowth.

Instruction on Installation of Excel HK1996.xls

(1) copy HK1996.xls to the Excel startup folder, e.g. c:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\XLSTART for Windows XP running Microsoft Office 2003, or c:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office 10\XLStart for earlier version of Microsoft office.

After successfully installing the relevant files as mentioned above, you can read lmsGrowth from the menu bar of Excel, click "LmsGrowth" | "Select Reference" to select "HK1996.xls" for activating 1993 Hong Kong Growth Standards data as a reference. "Calculator", "Measurements to/from SDS", "Centiles", "Weight Gain to SDS" and "BMI to IOTF Grade" can then be chosen from lmsGrowth menu to perform different calculations.
